Career Development Process

The career development process begins as soon as you enter St Joseph’s College.

This process may seem confusing and difficult, especially with all of the transitions you will encounter during your college career.  However, the process can be simplified if you break down the process into clearly defined steps. 

The first step in this process is to know yourself. A good career decision can only be made with self-discovery and assessment. Being able to identify your interests, skills, values and personality characteristics will help you begin the journey on your career path. A counselor in the Office of Career Development and Engagement is there to help you begin this process. 

The second step involves career exploration. What are the occupations and career fields that provide the best blend of your unique style, interests, skills and values? One of the goals in this step is to identify potential career options which are a good match for you. At this point, usually no later than the end of your sophomore year, speak with a counselor in the Office of Career Development and Engagement and utilize the resource, Career ideas for Majors , to help  you decide which major best fits your possible career options. It is important to note, that choosing a major in college does not pre-determine your entire professional career. Rather, there are many career paths that you will have the opportunity to explore.  Once you have made a decision, it’s time to take action.

The next step is to act on your decision. Career development and decision making is a proactive process that takes time. Participate in activities such as informational interviewing and job shadowing. Also, gain relevant experiences through internships, part-time jobs and volunteering. The last step is to evaluate your choice. Throughout life and within your career development plan, you may be presented with new choices and the need for more decisions. As a result, you may be confused and question your direction.  Your priorities, interests and values may change over time, which could affect your career choice. If you decide that it is time to make a change, you may need to revise your initial plan, go back to the previous step, or even step one.
