Brooklyn Voices Presents Mitch Landrieu

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – MARCH 8, 2018 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC), in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore, is pleased to welcome New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu to launch the Spring 2018 Brooklyn Voices Lecture Series. At this event, Landrieu will discuss his new book, In The Shadow of Statues: A White Southerner Confronts History, in conversation with Jelani Cobb, author and staff writer for The New Yorker, on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. in SJC Brooklyn’s Tuohy Hall Auditorium. 

“During my tenure at Loyola New Orleans, I had the opportunity to meet and work with Mitch Landrieu, and I always found him to be a man of uncommon decency and good sense,” said SJC President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D. “Furthermore, he is a lover of the arts and a musician himself. As someone with personal roots in the South and having resided in New Orleans for five years, I believe Mayor Landrieu's talk will provide an invaluable perspective on the issue of the historical legacy of the South and an opportunity to reflect on its contemporary impact on society. His success bringing New Orleans back to its former glory after Hurricane Katrina will go down as one of the greatest accomplishments in Louisiana history.”

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who sparked a national debate after first proposing removing Confederate statues in 2015, presents In the Shadow of Statues, a passionate, powerful memoir that urges America to reckon with its past. Equal parts unblinking memoir, history and prescription for finally confronting America's most painful legacy, In the Shadow of Statues will contribute strongly to the national conversation about race.
