PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – February 23, 2015 – In recognition of Black History Month, the Office of Multicultural Student Life at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will host a lecture titled, “Black Lives Matter” on Tuesday, February 24 at 12:40 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center on the College’s Long Island Campus.
Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner (DPC) Risco Mention-Lewis is the first African American and woman to be appointed to the position of Suffolk County DPC. In light of recent incidents between police and communities all over the country, DPC Mention-Lewis will challenge attendees to look at race relations on Long Island and how they pertain to our country as a whole.
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Christy Banks at 631.687.4596.
