SJC BROOKLYN SGA SUPPORTS THOSE IN NEED THIS THANKSGIVING

November 17, 2021 BK

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – November 17, 2021 - St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that SJC Brooklyn's Student Government Association will partner with Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens and Grandma’s Love, Inc., to support their annual Thanksgiving outreach and efforts.

This year, students, clubs and offices at SJC Brooklyn are working to gather non-perishable food items to support Catholic Charities' vast network of food pantries across Brooklyn and Queens. These items will be collected the week of Thanksgiving and be used as part of Catholic Charities’ efforts to provide millions of meals to needy and homebound New Yorkers.

“Pope Francis recently delivered his World Day of the Poor Message where he spoke of the need to reach the poor in their homes, care facilities and on the street,” said John Gonzalez, director of parish and community relations for Catholic Charities of Brooklyn/Queens. “We at Catholic Charities are excited to work with St. Joseph’s in fulfilling this aspiration by being able to serve our local community together with our food pantries, the Christmas toy distribution and our homeless outreach.”

SJC Brooklyn's Student Government Association also raised funds in support of Grandma’s Love, a local Brooklyn nonprofit organization committed to combating childhood hunger in communities throughout New York City, especially in low income and at-risk neighborhoods. This year marks the sixth anniversary of SJC Brooklyn’s support of Grandma’s Love’s annual Thanksgiving food drive.

“Each year we look forward to celebrating our Thanksgiving Food Drive tradition with the staff and students of St. Joseph’s College,” said Theresa Montforte-Caraballo, executive director and founder of Grandma’s Love, Inc. “Covid-19 has put many restrictions on events but Grandma’s Love and St. Joseph’s have managed to continue a much needed tradition of helping those less fortunate celebrate Thanksgiving with their family and friends.”

“In this season of reflection and gratitude, I couldn't be more appreciative of the generosity of our students and the entire College community,” said SJC President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D. “It's our pleasure to partner with Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens and Grandma's Love to spread holiday joy to those in our community most in need of it.”
