BROOKLYN, N.Y. – May 11, 2017 - St. Joseph’s College (SJC), the Brooklyn (Kings County) Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the office of the Brooklyn Borough President are pleased to announce that they will present a lecture on financial literacy at New Utrecht High School on Thursday, May 18 at 3:30 p.m. At this event, representatives from Astoria Bank will present the basics of personal finance to high school juniors and seniors in order to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge to make basic financial decisions as they enter adulthood.
“Financial literacy is an important skill for our young people as they tackle the daunting challenges of adulthood,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. “I want to thank St. Joseph’s College and the Brooklyn Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for their joint partnership on this initiative at New Utrecht High School. Through my administration’s ongoing financial education efforts, high school students in Bensonhurst and beyond are learning the most essential life skills that will serve them well into the future, such as understanding how to save money for college, manage expenses and budgeting. The earlier people save, the better, and that’s exactly what our youth across the borough should be doing as they leave school and enter the workforce.”
Currently in its sixth year, this partnership has provided more than 1,000 high school students with the knowledge of the basics of personal finance. In addition, admissions advisers from SJC Brooklyn will present a primer on financial aid and the college application process to help students successfully apply for college.
“We are delighted to once again team up with our corporate partner, St. Joseph's College, to provide this valuable service to the community,” said Rick Miranda, president and CEO, Brooklyn (Kings County) Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Education is at the heart of what we do and by working with the Borough President and St. Joseph's College, we are able to share our knowledge to serve the youth of Brooklyn.”
