BROOKLYN, N.Y. – March 15, 2017 - The Department of Child Study at SJC Brooklyn will welcome New York State Regent Kathleen M. Cashin, Ph.D., for a town hall event on the state of public education on Wednesday, March 29 at 5 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium.
Regent Cashin will present an overview of where public education stands today and what issues are likely to emerge at the forefront of debate in the near future. In addition, she will discuss recent developments in teacher certification and what this means to both aspiring teachers and those currently practicing in the field.
“As an institution known for excellence in teaching, it brings us great pleasure to welcome one of our own home to discuss the vital and emerging issues driving the debate in education,” said Barbara Garii, vice president for academic affairs at SJC Brooklyn. “Dr. Cashin’s insight on the federal landscape, as well as local issues such as teacher preparation and standards, will provide the audience with a well-rounded overview of the state of education as it stands today.”
Elected by a joint session of the Legislature to the Board of Regents to a four-year term in 2011 and a subsequent five-year term in 2015, Regent Cashin has served the students of New York City with distinction for more than 35 years as a teacher, superintendent and regional superintendent. For her work, Dr. Cashin was named Distinguished Educator of the Year by the New York City Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and served as a member of the Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning's senior team. Regent Cashin’s educational background includes a B.S. in Education from Brentwood College, M.S. in Education from Brooklyn College and a professional diploma and doctorate from Fordham University.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Susan Straut-Collard at [email protected].
