PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – October 29, 2015 – In recognition of Veterans Day and to honor the veteran population at SJC Long Island, the College is hosting its annual Veterans Awareness Week from Monday, November 9 to Thursday, November 12.
The schedule of events includes:
• Monday, November 9, 1–2 p.m.: Students will have the opportunity to ask a panel of veterans questions about their service and the lessons they have learned at the “Military Generations Panel” in room N129 of O'Connor Hall.
• Tuesday, November 10, 1–2 p.m.: The Student Veterans of America will host a hands-on experience for students. The "Life of a Solider" event will offer students a chance to explore military gear, try MREs (meals ready-to-eat) and speak to active soldiers about their experiences and other aspects of the military culture in the McGann Conference Center of O’Connor Hall.
• Wednesday, November 11, 1–2 p.m.: SJC Long Island will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony acknowledging veterans from the College and local community. All veterans in attendance will receive a token of appreciation from the College and will be recognized for their service in the McGann Conference Center of O’Connor Hall. Lunch will be served.
• Thursday, November 12, 7 p.m.: The Student Veterans of America and the History Club will be co-sponsoring the screening of Memorial Day. The film tells the story of SSgt. Kyle Vogel who discovered his Grandpa Bud’s WWII keepsakes on Memorial Day, 1993. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided. The screening will take place in the McGann Conference Center of O’Connor Hall.
A military-friendly school, SJC offers online, on- and off-site class schedules for its military and veteran students, including class offerings at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, New York. In addition, SJC is an active participant in the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon Program, offering veteran students financial support, a monthly housing allowance and an annual stipend for books and school supplies.
