BROOKLYN, N.Y. - March 2, 2015 - The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it has partnered with the Brooklyn Marriott, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the High School for Hospitality Management (HSHM) to provide aspiring young hospitality professionals with a unique first-hand experience of both the operations of a world-class hotel and how a college education can prepare them for successful careers in the hospitality industry.
“This experience embodies the mission of the HTM program at SJC, as it provides motivated, talented young students with the real-life experience they need to launch successful careers in the hospitality industry,” said Dr. Harold Nolan, chairperson and professor of HTM on SJC’s Brooklyn Campus. “We look forward to continued collaboration with the Marriott, the Chamber and the High School for Hospitality Management with the goal of ensuring that Brooklyn remains one of the prime tourism destinations in the world.”
On Wednesday, March 4 at 10:30 a.m., 15 students from HSHM will learn about the operations of the four-star Brooklyn Marriott in downtown Brooklyn — the largest hotel in Brooklyn — and gain valuable insight on what is required to provide guests with a first-rate experience. From there, they will travel to SJC and learn about how a college education and the HTM program at the College will provide them with the academic and practical skills for successful careers in this growing sector of the economy.
“The Brooklyn Marriott has always welcomed people from all over the world in a very big Brooklyn way,” said Sam Ibrahim, general manager at the Brooklyn Marriott. “We’re ready to extend a big Brooklyn welcome to St. Joseph’s College and the future hospitality professionals.”
“We are proud to partner with St. Joseph’s College in this work-based learning experience,” said Wayne Berning, hospitality coordinator for the High School of Hospitality Management, “This is a unique experience to combine visits with an industry operation such as the Brooklyn Marriott Hotel and with a dynamic and transforming four-year college such as St. Joseph’s College.”
