Patchogue, N.Y. – November 14, 2014 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will host the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Greater New York Regional Collegiate Programming Contest on its Long Island Campus on Sunday, November 16. This year, four teams of SJC students will compete.
Sponsored by IBM, the regional contest is a prominent annual multi-tiered computer programming competition that hosts teams of three students from more than 20 colleges and universities throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. During the contest, teams are given five hours to solve eight programming problems. The first and second place teams will represent the region at the ACM-ICPC World Finals in Morocco on May 16-21, 2015.
“Teams from colleges and universities in the tri-state area, such as NYU, Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Stony Brook, will be in attendance,” said William McAllister, professor of mathematics and computer science at SJC. “It is a very high stakes competition, because the first and second place teams will be moving on to the World Finals in Morocco.”
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) was established during a competition held at Texas A&M University in 1970. Since then, the contest has evolved into a multi-tier competition that includes participation from more than 29,000 of the finest students and faculty in computing disciplines from 2,322 universities from 91 countries on six continents. The ICPC fosters creativity, teamwork and innovation in building new software programs, and enables students to test their ability to perform under pressure.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information about the 2014 ACM Greater New York Regional Collegiate Programming Contest, visit: www.acmgnyr.org. For more information about SJC, visit www.sjny.edu.
