PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – December 11, 2017 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) scholarships for students who are pursuing careers in the science, technology and mathematics fields. The funds will also be used to provide new educational resources and opportunities for professional development.
“This grant will primarily go toward scholarships, but most importantly, it will establish a meaningful cohort experience for program participants,” said Ryan Schwarz, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics and computer science at SJC Long Island. “Cohort classes will feature enhanced curricula to foster more collaboration, and co-curricular activities will aid in promoting student interaction and engagement. Additionally, the grant program supports summer research and conference attendance for program participants.”
In 2012, SJC was awarded a $1.2M grant from the NSF’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program. The funding enabled SJC to create the STEM EMPOWERS (Encourages, Mentors and Prepares Others With Educational Resources and Scholarships) program to recruit potential teachers with strong skills in mathematics or science, especially women and under-represented minorities. In addition, the program provides SJC students with paid internships, educational resources, academic support and opportunities to participate in research programs while preparing to teach in high-need secondary schools throughout Brooklyn and Long Island.
"We are honored to have been awarded another prestigious grant that will allow us to provide scholarships and programs for our students," said Victoria Hong, chairperson of SJC Long Island’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. "One of the featured pieces of the program will be to pair students with both faculty and industry mentors to promote academic engagement and career readiness."
