PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – November 14, 2014 – The Department of Philosophy at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will host the lecture, “Mike Brown Means Fight Back” by Community Activist Eljeer Hawkins on Wednesday, November 19 at 12:40 p.m. in the Shea Conference Room on the College’s Long Island Campus.
“Our speaker, Eljeer Hawkins, has just returned from the demonstrations in Missouri,” said Landon Frim, assistant professor of philosophy on SJC’s Long Island Campus. “His lecture will offer audience members a first-hand report on the current unrest in Ferguson, and the efforts of community organizations following the tragic shooting of Michael Brown. The lecture will also focus on a class-conscious critique of the unjust system and similar shootings of young black males by police.”
The shooting of Michael Brown occurred on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Brown, a black man, was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, a white police officer. The disputed circumstances of the shooting and the resulting protests and civil unrest received considerable attention in the U.S. and abroad. The events surrounding the shooting are currently under investigation by the St. Louis County grand jury.
