Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to Speak During SJC Long Island’s Earth Week

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – In celebration of Earth Day, the Sustainability Committee at St. Joseph's College (SJC) will host a series of events for Earth Week beginning on Monday, April 17 and leading up to Earth Day on Saturday, April 22. The events will take place at SJC Long Island located in Patchogue, New York.

The Earth Week schedule is as follows:

  • Monday, April 17 – Nature Trail Cleanup –1-2 p.m., Clare Rose Playhouse – Attendees will assist in the reopening of the College’s nature trail that borders Patchogue Lake.
  • Tuesday, April 18 – “The State of Long Island's Water: An Earth Week Conversation with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone,” 1-2 p.m., Room N129, O’Connor Hall – SJC Long Island's Political Science Club is sponsoring a visit by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone who will speak about policy and water quality on Long Island.
  • Wednesday, April 19 – Bikes and Bagels, 7:30 a.m. at Sayville Train Station and/or 8 a.m. at Corey Beach parking lot – Join SJC Long Island staff, students and faculty as they bike to campus to enjoy breakfast on their arrival.
  • Wednesday, April 19 – Earth Day Celebration, noon-2 p.m., Danzi Athletic Center Lawn – This event will feature local businesses and organizations that utilize green practices and promote sustainable living, such as Fire Island National Seashore, Transit Solutions, HomeGrown Change, World Village Fair Trade and 511 Ride Share. Refreshments will be available, including coffee from Roast Coffee & Tea. Music provided by SJC Radio.
  • Thursday, April 20 – “The Emerging Environmental Agenda of the Trump Administration,” 1-2 p.m., Shea Conference Room – Join Distinguished Professor Tim Bishop and Associate Professor Kirk Lawrence for a discussion of the emerging environmental positions and policies of the Trump administration.
  • Friday, April 21 – Patchogue Lake Cleanup – 1-2 p.m., meet in N233 – Attendees will help to rid Patchogue Lake of debris.
  • Saturday, April 22 – Earth Day – Join SJC Long Island’s Students Taking Active Roles in Society (S.T.A.R.S.) and Habitat for Humanity clubs to prepare the community garden in East Patchogue.

“With this series of events, we hope to educate the SJC community on what local organizations and individuals are doing to protect the environment,” said Kirk Lawrence, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Sociology at SJC Long Island. “Our hope is that attendees become inspired enough to take action toward sustainability.”
