Tim Bishop to Host Affordable Care Act Seminar Series

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – June 15, 2015 – The Center for Community Solutions at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will be hosting the first of three seminars on the Affordable Care Act on Thursday, July 23 from 8–10 a.m. in the McGann Conference Center at SJC Long Island.
    
The seminar, “The Affordable Care Act: Taking Stock,” will feature a panel of health care providers, including Joy Elwell, D.N.P., F.N.P.-B.C., A.P.R.N., F.A.A.N.P., associate clinical professor at the University of Connecticut’s School of Nursing; L. Reuven Pasternak, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., chief executive officer and vice president for health systems of Stony Brook University Hospital; Richard Margulis ’85, M.B.A., president and CEO of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center and adjunct professor of health administration at SJC; Charles Rothberg, M.D., chief of ophthalmology at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center and vice president of the Medical Society of the State of New York; and Maria Basile, M.D., M.B.A., assistant vice president of medical affairs at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and immediate past president of the Suffolk County Medical Society. The panel will be moderated by Tim Bishop, distinguished professor of civic engagement and public service at SJC and former U.S. Representative (2003–2015). 

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the landmark health reform legislation that was signed into law by President Obama in March 2010. Its goals include extending health care coverage to millions of uninsured Americans, lowering the rate of increase of health care costs and increasing the efficiency of the health care delivery system. The intent of SJC’s seminar series is to assess the progress that has been made toward reaching these goals. 

This seminar series, which are free and open to the public, will also feature “The Affordable Care Act: The Payer’s Perspective” on Friday, October 16 and “The Affordable Care Act: The Community’s Perspective” on Friday, April 15, 2016.
