Brooklyn Voices Welcomes Jennifer Senior

BROOKLYN, N.Y. January 14, 2014 - St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will welcome New York Magazine columnist Jennifer Senior to discuss her new book, All Work and No Fun, as part of its spring Brooklyn Voices lecture series. This lecture will take place on Wednesday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium, located on the Brooklyn Campus of SJC.

"Jennifer Senior is one of the most unique journalistic voices writing on social issues today, said Richard Greenwald, executive dean of SJCs Brooklyn Campus. "Her honest and frank research on the impact of parenting, family life and personal development challenges conventional wisdom and provides great insight into how raising a child impacts the lives of not only the child, but the parent as well.

When New York magazine contributing editor Jennifer Seniors cover article, "All Joy and No Fun, was published in 2010, it set off a firestorm of responses in the media and blogosphere. Sharing scientific experiments and studies that show parents are no happier than their childless peers, Senior argued that although parenting can come at a high price, the high rewards are not always measurable by surveys and questionnaires. Now, Seniors fresh and highly anticipated debut book brings together an extensive amount of research in history, sociology, economics, psychology and anthropology, as well as interviews from the parenting trenches themselves, to examine how children have truly reshaped their parents lives. Senior will talk with Jodi Kantor, New York Times correspondent and author of the best-selling and critically acclaimed biography of the Obama family, about the huge body of research on the paradoxes of modern parenting and why her unique take on the issue became such a flashpoint for parents and non-parents alike.
