PATCHOGUE AND BROOKLYN, N.Y. March 1, 2010 St. Josephs College is pleased to announce The Dr. Reza Khatib and Georgianna Clifford Khatib Chair in Comparative Religion Second Annual Lecture featuring Middle Eastern and Islamic historian Dr. Margot Badran. The events 2010 chair, Dr. Badran will present a lecture entitled, "Islam and Gender Journey into the 21st Century," on Monday, March 22 at the Brooklyn Campus and Tuesday, April 13 at the Long Island Campus. Both lectures will begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
Dr. Margot Badran specializes in gender studies and feminism in Muslim societies and serves as a senior fellow at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University. While previously employed by Northwestern University, she was the Edith Kreeger Wolf Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Religion and preceptor at the Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa. Dr. Badran received her doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University and has authored several books, including her most recent, Feminism in Islam: Secular and Religious Convergences.
Funded by Dr. Reza Khatib and Mrs. Georgianna Clifford Khatib 52, the chairs purpose is to promote interfaith dialog, with the study of Islam being an integral part of the initiative. Each year, The Dr. Reza and Georgianna Clifford Khatib chair will host a noted scholar who will lecture, lead faculty discussions and teach a course to both campuses via videoconference.
