BROOKLYN, N.Y. – April 9, 2015 - The Department of Journalism and New Media Studies at St. Joseph’s College (SJC), in partnership with VICE News, will once again host NewsHive, a two-day meetup at which aspiring young journalists compete to create their own pop-up newsroom and report stories. The event begins on the evening of Friday, April 24 and lasts all day Saturday, April 25 in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium on SJC’s Brooklyn Campus.
NewsHive is a two-day pop-up newsroom for young reporters in New York City. Based on a hackathon model of creating an original idea and developing it into its final copy within 24 hours. For two days, 35 to 40 students, ranging from ages 14 to 24, will come together to create digital stories that discuss important issues facing young people in NYC. For this event, students from across the five boroughs will assemble at SJC to cover the theme of environmental justice.
During the NewsHive, a panel of more than one dozen prominent media figures will mentor the young media makers and help them compile their reports. After the stories have been researched, drafted and edited, teams will collaborate to create a digital news product to be judged by the panel of media professionals. Winners will have their story potentially featured on the VICE News website and receive a tour of VICE headquarters in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
"We're really excited about our partner for this year's NewsHive,” said Dr. Ted Hamm, chair of the Department of Journalism and New Media Studies at SJC. “VICE News is at the forefront of media coverage of climate change and environmental justice, and participants in the NewsHive will see how these issues are affecting neighborhoods from the Rockaways to Greenpoint.”
