SJC STUDENTS AWARDED WRITERS INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIPS

March 26, 2020

Brooklyn, N.Y. – March 26, 2020 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that two students from the Writer’s Foundry at SJC Brooklyn have been awarded scholarships to the New York State Summer Writers Institute at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Amelia Pisapia ’21 and Joseph Buss ’21 were selected from more than 230 applicants from a wide range of colleges and universities in the country. They will attend the institute this summer for workshops in poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction writing.

“Attending the New York State Summer Writers Institute as a scholarship recipient in 2013 changed my work and allowed me to show up even braver to the page alongside an extended community of writers,” said Carly Miller, Writer’s Foundry lecturer. “Joseph and Amelia have already shown immense bravery in their poems and prose, respectively. I am glad they get to represent The Writer's Foundry at one of the most prestigious summer workshops in the nation."

The 34th annual Summer Writers Institute is designed for college-aged students and adults. A staff of distinguished writers serve as faculty for workshops in poetry, fiction and non-fiction writing, as well as nightly readings, Q&A sessions with visiting writers and private tutoring sessions.

“Joseph has an expansive knowledge of poetry's history and knowing where their lineage lies, yet has found ways to rupture and push toward new forms of emotionality,” said Miller. “Amelia has been bringing intelligent lyric essays into class, confronting her subjects with a stark eye for symbols that make her explorations toward clarity of thought and self remarkable to read.”
