October 30, 2024

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – October 30, 2024 – St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY) is pleased to announce that President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., has been named as a Power Player in Education by PoliticsNY and amNY Metro. The list honors individuals who are leading New York’s education system, including presidents of educational institutions, public officials and nonprofit directors.

“I am grateful to once again be recognized and share this honor with leaders who are making positive impacts across New York’s education system,” said SJNY President Boomgaarden. “Providing opportunities for students to meet their goals and achieve degrees is important work. We are all doing our part to shape the future of New York by preparing the next generation of leaders.”

Dr. Boomgaarden is the eighth president of St. Joseph's University, New York (formerly known as St. Joseph’s College). During his tenure, he has overseen an historical designation change from College to University — a status granted by the New York State Department of Education and New York State Board of Regents in April 2022.

Dr. Boomgaarden’s commitment to the University’s mission is evident in the meaningful initiatives he continues to move forward. Under his leadership, the University routinely adds new academic programs and makes improvements to its physical campuses, including the construction of a state-of-the-art multi-million dollar student center on the Long Island campus in Patchogue. He also makes frequent media appearances as an industry leader in higher education.
Dr. Boomgaarden serves on the board of trustees for the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU); is Board Chair of the Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph (ACSSJ), a national organization of colleges and universities across the nation; a steering committee member of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education (LIRACHE), where he was also chair of the Superintendents and College President’s Partnership; and is a member and former chair of the Lower Hudson Valley Consortium of Catholic Colleges and Universities; and member of the Board of Trustees for Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Long Island Association (LIA).

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Dr. Boomgaarden also studied at the University of Vienna, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He graduated from Harvard University’s Institute for Management and Leadership in Education, and has held teaching positions at the Eastman School of Music, Ithaca College Conservatory of Music, St. Mary’s College in Maryland, the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Salzburg, Loyola University Maryland and Loyola University New Orleans.
