SJNY STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR DEDICATION TO UNIVERSITY’S MISSION

BROOKLYN and PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – June 3, 2024 – St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY) recently recognized two graduating seniors, Pileigh Shahinian ’24 and Leandra Fernandez ’24, for their embodiment of the University’s mission, with the esteemed Donald R. Boomgaarden Leadership in Action Award.

Shahinian, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in adolescence education from SJNY’s Long Island campus, was involved in numerous campus activities, including founding the Creative Writing Club and serving as president of Sigma Tau Delta. She also served as an orientation team leader, peer tutor and test proctor, and member of BASIC, a Christian club on campus.

Fernandez graduates SJNY’s Brooklyn campus with a B.A. in Child Study. She volunteered at the campus’ Dillon Child Study Center and held roles in various clubs and organizations, including the Pride Club and the Child Study Club. Outside of the classroom, she mentored ballet classes for students with special needs.

Named for the University’s current president, the Donald R. Boomgaarden Leadership in Action Award acknowledges individuals who exhibit the ideals of integrity, service and social responsibility that lie at the heart of the University’s mission.
