ST. JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY, NEW YORK PRESIDENT NAMED POWER PLAYER IN EDUCATION

October 11, 2023

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – October 11, 2023 – St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY) is pleased to announce that President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., has been named as a Power Player in Education by PoliticsNY and amNY Metro. The list honors individuals who are leading New York’s education system, including presidents of educational institutions, public officials and nonprofit directors.

“I am honored to once again be recognized among so many prestigious leaders who are doing wonderful things for higher education in New York,” said SJNY President Boomgaarden. “Despite some current challenges we are all facing, the work we do is important. The speed with which knowledge is growing is astonishing and higher education can lead the way to a successful and meaningful life for many young people.”

Dr. Boomgaarden is the eighth president of St. Joseph's University, New York (formerly known as St. Joseph’s College). During his tenure, he has overseen an historical designation change from College to University — a status granted by the New York State Department of Education and New York State Board of Regents in April 2022; has been at the forefront of a successful reaccreditation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; launched two consecutive strategic plans; and grown the University’s endowment by nearly 50 percent.

Dr. Boomgaarden’s commitment to the University’s mission is evident in the meaningful initiatives he continues to move forward. Under his leadership, the University is currently adding new academic programs, making improvements to its physical campuses and constructing a state-of-the-art multi-million dollar student center on its Long Island campus slated to open in fall 2023. He also makes frequent media appearances as an industry leader in higher education.

Dr. Boomgaarden serves on the board of trustees for the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU); is Board Chair of the Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph (ACSSJ), a national organization of colleges and universities across the nation; a steering committee member of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education (LIRACHE), where he is also chair to the Superintendents and College President’s Partnership; and is chair of the Lower Hudson Valley Consortium of Catholic Colleges and Universities.

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Dr. Boomgaarden also studied at the University of Vienna, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He graduated from Harvard University’s Institute for Management and Leadership in Education, and has held teaching positions at the Eastman School of Music, Ithaca College Conservatory of Music, St. Mary’s College in Maryland, the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Salzburg, Loyola University Maryland and Loyola University New Orleans.
