BROOKLYN, N.Y. — June 16, 2015 — Entering its second-year partnership with Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York (BHGHNY), St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is embarking on an expanded learning program for BHGHNY’s scholars that will now welcome BHGHNY’s incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors to the College’s Brooklyn Campus. Previously known as the Summer Enrichment Academy, the program was only open to BHGHNY’s freshmen and sophomores. With Summer Enrichment Academy now open to upperclassmen, SJC will be delivering excellence in education to more than 70 BHGHNY students, doubling last year's enrollment.
“SJC is proud to assist BHGHNY in its mission to help academically capable and motivated children from at-risk situations meet their full potential,” said Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D., SJC president. “SJC is honored to work with BHGHNY to provide students with a safe environment, academic support and the guidance they need to finish high school, graduate from college, and become responsible and productive citizens.”
The Summer Enrichment Academy will take place at SJC’s Brooklyn Campus from Tuesday, July 7 to Thursday, August 7. The curriculum focuses on mastering skills in math, writing and reading comprehension, as well as promoting active learning and developing consistent and productive study habits. Advanced literature and calculus courses are available to upperclassmen to further challenge them and prepare them for college. BHGHNY is also planning a wide range of extracurricular activities to provide recreation, discovery and relaxation to participants.
In addition to the Summer Enrichment Academy’s regular programming, U.S. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) will speak about Pell Grants and the importance of advocacy and civic involvement on Monday, July 20 at 11 a.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium, located on SJC’s Brooklyn Campus.
“BHGHNY is thrilled to return to St. Joseph’s College for year two of its Summer Enrichment Academy,” said Malick Fall, executive director of Boys Hope Girls Hope. “The Campus has become a second home to many of our scholars, who during the school year take college-level courses in the evening to further enrich their high school career. We are profoundly grateful for SJC’s continuous support and generosity and for enabling our young men and women, most of them first-generation college-bound, to spend five weeks learning how to become scholars on a college campus.”
