Annual Founders Day Lecture

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – October 4, 2017 - St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to welcome Dr. Thomas Landy, professor of sociology at the College of the Holy Cross and founder of Collegium, on Thursday, October 12 at 1 p.m. in the College’s Tuohy Hall Auditorium at SJC Brooklyn. Dr. Landy will present at the College’s annual Founders Day lecture.

“Founders Day celebrates the rich tradition of academic excellence instilled in the College by its founding order, the Sisters of St. Joseph,” said Donald Boomgaarden, Ph.D., SJC President. “I find it uniquely appropriate that we welcome Dr. Landy as our Founders Day speaker as his work on integrating the universal elements of Catholic education across all academic disciplines highlights the timeless virtue of these values and the importance of them in the education we deliver to our students. Furthermore, his special connection and commitment to Jesuit traditions of higher education is particularly welcome to us due to the strong historical connections between the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Society of Jesus.”

Dr. Landy is a sociologist with a specialization in the sociology of religion and Catholicism, and director of the Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J. Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture at the College of the Holy Cross. His primary research is in global Catholicism, and he founded and leads research for Catholics & Cultures, a web-based initiative to explore the religious lives and practices of lay Catholics in their particular cultural contexts around the world. In 1992, he founded Collegium, a colloquy on faith and intellectual life. Since 2001, Collegium has been sponsored by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and Landy continues to serve as Collegium's executive director.

Every year, St. Joseph’s College celebrates the pioneering spirit of its inaugural class by holding the Founders Day lecture. This lecture, which has featured some of the most dynamic and respected figures in a wide range of disciplines, serves as a living testament to the probing intellect and dedication to learning  shared by the enterprising young women who opened St. Joseph’s doors more than a century ago.
