Brooklyn Campus Council for the Arts Presents Decadancetheatre

BROOKLYN, NY October 26, 2011 - St. Josephs College Council for the Arts is pleased to announce that local dance company Decadancetheatre will present their latest piece, When the Sky Breaks, on Thursday, November 3 at 12:40 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium, 245 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn. This event is free and open to the public.

Since 2004, Brooklyn-based Decadancetheatre has been redefining the image of women in hip-hop.  Through performances, workshops and creative commissions, Decadancetheatre has become a key ambassador of authentic, New York City hip-hop culture around the world. Led by Artistic Director Jennifer Weber, the company represents a global vision of hip-hop with an international roster of dancers from the U.S., U.K., Norway, France and Japan. Challenging hip-hops male-dominated convention, Decadancetheatre takes female dancers out of the background of music videos and into the forefront of theatrical performance.

Decadancetheatre emerged on the hip-hop scene in 2004 with the debut of Decadance vs. The Firebirdan urban re-imagination of the 1910 Stravinsky Ballet. The hip-hop ballet mash-up won the 2004 Best Choreography Award at the New York International Fringe Festival and received critical acclaim in The New York Times and The Village VoiceSince premiering that signature work, Deca continues to explore hip-hop theatre, adapting texts ranging from a 12th century Japanese ghost story to a more personal narrative inspired by the challenges woman face in hip-hop today.  Focusing on all elements of hip-hop, including b-boying (breakdance) mcing, djing and graffiti, Decadancetheatres core vision translates the vibrant energy of New York Citys street culture to the international stage.

Founded by S. Elizabeth A. Hill, C.S.J., J.D., president, the St. Josephs College Council for the Arts is a coalition of students, faculty members and staff who serve as a focal point for St. Josephs Colleges educational and community outreach programming in the arts. By expanding and integrating campus arts activities, the Council seeks to enhance the public image of the College as a cultural center in Brooklyn and aims to make arts and cultural events more accessible to its students and area neighbors.
