Brooklyn Voices Presents Chris Hayes

March 30, 2017

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – March 30, 2017 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC), in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore, is pleased to announce that it will welcome Chris Hayes to discuss his latest work, A Colony, Not A Nation,  in conversation with journalist Wesley Lowery on Saturday, April 8 at 6 p.m. at SJC Brooklyn. This event will take place in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium and is part of SJC’s spring 2017 Brooklyn Voices lecture series.

“With an incredibly diverse student body, SJC Brooklyn is acutely sensitive to the challenges that exist in society as they pertain to race,” said Barbara Garii, Ph.D.,vice president for academic affairs at SJC Brooklyn. “I look forward to the conversation regarding Hayes' new work and his views on how we can consciously move toward greater equality for all.”

In his new book, New York Times best-selling author and Emmy Award–winning news anchor Chris Hayes argues that there are really two Americas: a Colony and a Nation. In the Nation, we venerate the law; in the Colony, policing resembles occupation. How and why did Americans build a system where conditions in Ferguson and West Baltimore mirror those that sparked the American Revolution? Hayes talks about the deep racial inequalities in America’s approach to justice with fellow journalist Wesley Lowery, whose 2016 book, They Can’t Kill Us All: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era in America’s Racial Justice Movement, offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the Black Lives Matter movement.

Tickets for this event are $30 and include a copy of the book. Both Hayes and Lowery will sign books following the event. To purchase tickets, visit https://bkvhayes.eventbrite.com. For more information, contact Michael Banach at 718.940.5584 or [email protected].
