Brooklyn Voices Welcomes Author Deborah Feldman

BROOKLYN, NY March 14, 2014 - St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to welcome Deborah Feldman, author of Unorthodox and the forthcoming Exodus, to discuss her latest work as part of the spring 2014 Brooklyn Voices lecture series. This event, in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore and The Brooklyn Rail, will take place on Friday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium located on the Colleges Brooklyn Campus.

"Ms. Feldmans insights on starting a new life and her experiences speak to the power of faith and tradition and of the difficulties of acclimating oneself to a new and challenging environment, said Richard Greenwald, executive dean of SJCs Brooklyn Campus.

Raised under the strict rules of a Satmar Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, Feldman (Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots, 2012) had no clue how tightknit that community was when she decided to leave her marriage and a man she didnt love with her young son to find a new life. "Leaving, to me, felt like climbing a tremendous hill, writes the author, "one of those steep inclines that becomes almost treacherous in that the more momentum you build while racing down it, the more difficult it becomes to stop safely. As a result, she found herself ostracized from the Jewish system she had been raised in and an outsider to the rest of the world. Feldmans story provides readers with an honest assessment of the strength of ones convictions and the effect a strict religious background can have on a person.
