NYC Commissioner to Speak About Domestic Violence

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – April 9, 2015 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that the Social Thinkers and the Law and Justice Society will welcome Rosemonde Pierre-Louis, commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence (OCDV), on Tuesday, April 28 from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium at SJC’s Brooklyn Campus.

At this event, Commissioner Pierre-Louis will discuss the dynamics of an abusive relationship and forms of abuse. Additionally, she will highlight how everyday New Yorkers can move from bystanders to upstanders, and help to strengthen the safety net for victims of domestic violence throughout NYC.

“The Social Thinkers and Law and Justice Society at SJC both want the student body to know that they have a voice when it comes to domestic abuse and sexual assault, and that there are options and resources available should they need them now or ever,” said Kristina Hernandez, president of the Social Thinkers at SJC. “Love should not hurt and victims should not be silenced.”

Rosemonde Pierre-Louis was appointed by NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio as the Commissioner of the Mayor’s OCDV in January 2014. OCDV, established in 2001, oversees the citywide delivery of domestic violence services, develops policies and programs, and works with diverse communities to increase awareness of domestic violence. OCDV works alongside NYC agencies, community-based and advocacy organizations, local leaders, and service providers to expand access to services citywide for victims and their children to receive the help that they need.
