SJC Announces Third Annual Lecture in Comparative Religion

PATCHOGUE AND BROOKLYN, N.Y. March 7, 2011 St. Josephs College is pleased to announce The Dr. Reza Khatib and Georgianna Clifford Khatib Chair in Comparative Religion Third Annual Lecture featuring Korean Christian theologian and Eco-feminist Dr. Chung Hyun Kyung. Dr. Chung will present a lecture entitled, "A Buddhist Perspective on Personal and Social Ethics, on Tuesday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. on the Long Island Campus and Tuesday, April 5 at 12:30 p.m. on the Brooklyn Campus. Both lectures are free and open to the public.

Korean Christian theologian and lay theologian of the Presbyterian Church of Korea, Chung Hyun Kyung has taught and researched feminist and eco-feminist theologies, Christian-Buddhist dialogue and many other cross-cultural issues. Currently an associate professor of ecumenical studies at the Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, Dr. Chung has authored several books, including her best-known book Struggling to be the Sun Again: Introducing Asian Womens Theology (1991). She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Ewha Womens University in Seoul and holds the M.Div. from the School of Theology at Claremont, a diploma from the Womens Theological Center in Boston and a Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary.

Funded by Dr. Reza Khatib and Mrs. Georgianna Clifford Khatib 52, the chairs purpose is to promote interfaith dialog, with the study of Islam being an integral part of the initiative. Each spring, through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Khatib, the College hosts a noted scholar who lectures, leads faculty discussions and teaches a course to students from both campuses.
