BROOKLYN, N.Y. – November 10, 2016 – The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will conduct a hospitality competition for high school and two-year college students on Friday, November 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at SJC Brooklyn.
Sponsored by Harri and The Meatball Shop, this event will challenge more than 100 students from the five boroughs and New Jersey to test their skills and knowledge about several different aspects of hospitality against their peers, with winning teams earning accolades and unique prizes provided by Harri.
“The HTM program at SJC Brooklyn seeks to make a meaningful contribution to the dynamic and thriving tourism industry of the five boroughs,” said Damien L. Duchamp, chairperson of the Department of HTM at SJC Brooklyn. “By bridging the theoretical and the practical, and providing these students with the chance to practice these skills among their peers, we aim to showcase our unique approach, as well as offer them a chance to celebrate the hospitality industry.”
At this competition, students will compete to finish a range of tasks that they can expect to encounter in the hospitality industry. From quickly resetting tables, carrying plates, setting up rooms, creating animals out of towels, and de-escalating conflicts with customers, these challenges are designed to teach interested students the skills they need to thrive in the industry, as well as foster the necessary interpersonal communication skills to effectively work as a team.
“Harri is thrilled to partner with SJC Brooklyn to present the Hospitalented Challenge, an exciting hospitality focused event for local high school and community college students,” said Amanda Halle, director of partnerships at Harri. “We're committed to providing the younger generation with learning and experience in the ways of the hospitality world, connections to professionals within the industry and access to future job opportunities.”
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Damien Duchamp at 718.940.5887 or [email protected].
