SJC BROOKLYN TO HOST INAUGURAL INSTITUTE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM

July 03, 2018

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – July 3, 2018 - St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that that it will host the inaugural Institute for Environmental Journalism at SJC Brooklyn from July 9- July 27. The 15-day journalism boot camp, conducted by the Pulitzer Prize-winning news outlet InsideClimate News, is designed to train talented high school students to serve as the next generation of environmental reporters.

“In the coming years, all journalists will encounter the impact of climate change, both direct and indirect, and cover multiple aspects of it in their reporting,” said Ted Hamm, Ph.D., chair of the journalism and new media studies department at SJC Brooklyn. “We look forward to hosting this camp and welcome the opportunity to develop the skills of these aspiring reporters so that they can make a lasting contribution to the future of public discourse and dialogue.”

Award-winning journalists and instructors will teach the fundamentals of journalism, including multimedia storytelling, interviewing techniques, and how to develop story ideas and sources. Students will also learn about climate science, clean energy technology, environmental justice, environmental policy and news literacy. Field trips are planned to the Gowanus Canal, BuzzFeed and the Newtown Waste Water Treatment Plant. Students will also produce their own piece of environmental journalism. The Institute was made possible in large part through a grant from the Hearst Foundation. Additional scholarships were provided by the Ida B. Wells Society, which seeks to increase investigative reporting opportunities among journalists of color.

The lead teacher and curriculum developer for the program is Katina Paron, director of the NYC High School Journalism Collaborative at Baruch College, and board member for The Deadline Club. As a journalism educator and editor, Paron has helped thousands of young people earn their first professional bylines. She has written about youth journalism for The New York Times, The Daily News, WNYC SchoolBook and more. Her comic book-style textbook,  A NewsHound's Guide to Student Journalism, is forthcoming from McFarland Publishing.
