SJC Brooklyn to Host Prestigious Psychology Conference

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – February 29, 2016 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will host the American Psychological Association’s Society for the Psychology, Religion and Spirituality’s Mid-Year Conference from Thursday, March 10 to Saturday, March 12 at SJC Brooklyn. This conference features two keynote addresses from highly accomplished scholars Dr. Paul Bloom, the Brooks and Suzanne Ragen professor of psychology at Yale University, and Dr. Sheldon Solomon, professor of psychology at Skidmore College.

“We are very excited to be hosting this conference,” said Dr. Dominique Treboux, professor and chair of the Department of Psychology at SJC. “As the College celebrates its centennial, we find it especially meaningful to be hosting this meeting and to provide a forum for world-renowned thinkers to share their wisdom and research.”

Dr. Bloom is known for his research on religion, morality and children. His talk is titled “There is Nothing Special about Religious Belief,” and will take place on Thursday, March 10 at 4:30 p.m. at SJC Brooklyn’s Hill Center. 

Dr. Solomon is known for his research investigating how people face their mortality and will present work from his book, The Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death in Life, on Saturday, March 12 at 12 p.m. at SJC Brooklyn’s Hill Center.

In addition, SJC Brooklyn faculty and students will participate in other presentations that will focus on issues of the role religion plays in promoting resilience, religious motivation and behavior, and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of religion. Along with these presentations, this conference will offer continuing education workshops for those looking to enhance and build upon their credentials.

Conference registration includes participation in all invited talks, papers, symposia and poster sessions, program book, breakfasts, lunches and opening reception. The pre-conference will begin on Thursday, March 10 at the Hill Center. The conference will begin on Friday, March 11 and conclude on Saturday, March 12.
