November 16, 2015
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – November 16, 2015 - The Department of Journalism and New Media Studies at SJC Brooklyn is pleased to announce that it will welcome Luc Sante to present his latest book, The Other Paris, on Monday, November 23 at 7 p.m. in the Student Lounge of Tuohy Hall. He will discuss The Other Paris and his other works in conversation with Dr. Ted Hamm, chair of journalism and new media studies at SJC Brooklyn.
“When one thinks of Paris, what comes to mind are images of the Belle Epoque, glittering lights, leafy, tree-lined boulevards, under the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower,” said Dr. Jill Rehmann, vice president of academic affairs for SJC Brooklyn. “Sante's newest book, much as his famed Low Life did for NYC, tells the tale of the darker, bohemian side of Paris, and the era that inspired much of the great art and literature of the turn of the century.”
Paris, the City of Light, the city of fine dining and seductive couture and intellectual hauteur, was, until recently, always accompanied by its shadow: the city of the poor, the outcast, the criminal, the eccentric, the willfully nonconforming. In The Other Paris, Luc Sante gives us a panoramic view of that second metropolis, which has nearly vanished but whose traces are in the bricks and stones of the contemporary city, in the culture of France itself, and, by extension, throughout the world.
Sante is an author, and book and film critic. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including Whiting Writer’s Award, Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Cultural Award from the Belgian-American Chamber of Commerce, American Scholar Award for Best Literary Criticism, Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography and Guggenheim, and Cullman Fellowships.
This event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and guests will have a chance to have it personally signed by the author.
