SJC Brooklyn Welcomes Mary Chang

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – September 4, 2015 – SJC Brooklyn’s Council for the Arts is pleased to announce that it will showcase the works of Mary Chang in an exhibit entitled “Abstraction,” from September 8 to October 22. The exhibit will take place in the Alumni Room Gallery of Tuohy Hall. 

In addition, SJC Brooklyn will host an opening reception on Monday, September 14 at 5:30 p.m., an artist’s talk on Sunday, October 4 at 12 p.m. and a gallery talk on Thursday, October 8 at 1 p.m. 

Chang was born in Manhattan, New York, raised in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn and currently resides in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. She attended the School Visual Arts and began working in the print medium with master printers Sheila Marbain and Sheila Goloborotko. Chang’s work has been exhibited at Restoration Skylight Gallery, Dorsey's Gallery, MoCADA, Corridor Gallery, Rush Arts, Robert Lehman Gallery at Urban Glass, Tabla Rasa and various other galleries, museums and cultural centers throughout the tri-state area, Massachusetts, California and Brazil. 

“With Abstraction, what do I have here?  I use the freedom from representational qualities and allow myself to draw within and connect to the subconscious,” said Chang. “In this practice, the work evolves into a visual form and each work appears complete. I am thinking these are sections of the infinite picture and these sections are processed through the state of abstracting from within.”

The Council for the Arts is a coalition of students, faculty members and staff who serve as a focal point for SJC Brooklyn’s educational and community outreach programming in the arts. By expanding and integrating campus arts activities, the Council seeks to enhance the public image of the College as a cultural center in Brooklyn and aims to make arts and cultural events more accessible to its students and area neighbors.
