BROOKLYN and PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – June 3, 2020 – The Department of Biology and Theta Iota Chapter of St. Joseph’s College (SJC) have been recognized by Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta), the National Biology Honor Society, and were named the Honorable Mention winner of the 2018-2019 Lloyd M. Bertholf Award, which recognizes undergraduate research and publications.

“The faculty of the Biology Department of St. Joseph's College celebrate the successes of our students,” said Valerie Giordano, Ph.D., adviser for SJC’s Theta Iota Chapter and associate professor of biology. “We proudly accept Honorable Mention for the Bertholf Award as recognition of the motivation and dedication of our students to scientific research, departmental service and academic excellence.”

The Lloyd M. Bertholf Award was first established in 1961 by Lloyd M. Bertholf, the third President of Beta Beta Beta and President of Illinois Wesleyan University. Its purpose was to provide national and local recognition to the chapter that most nearly met a series of criteria for program excellence. In 1969 two Honorable Mentions were added to the award for second and third places as well as the Outstanding Chapter Award which could recognize up to 10% of the total chapters.
