SJC Hosts Discussion on Internet Harassment and Cyber-Bullying

BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, NY November 5, 2010 As part of a college-wide initiative in response to the recent nationwide bullying crisis, the Office of Student Life at St. Josephs College held discussions on both of its campuses on cyber-bullying and social networking issues.

C.L. Lindsay III, executive director of the Coalition for Student & Academic Rights (CO-STAR), spent two consecutive days giving presentations to students on the Colleges Brooklyn and Long Island campuses on November 1 and 2 entitled, "Internet Safety, which focused on the increase in digital harassment on college campuses, the proper usage of social networking websites, the dangers of cyber-bullying and solutions students can use to deal with problems online.

"Bullying and cyber-bullying has become a growing problem and we must educate our students to recognize and not tolerate this behavior, SJC Dean of Students Susan M. Hudec, Ph.D., said. "In keeping with the mission and motto of our college , Esse non Videri, "To be and not to seem," our students are speaking out against bullying on both campuses through educational workshops. They refuse to tolerate this damaging behavior by taking action.

C.L. Lindsay founded CO-STAR in 1998 as a free service to help college students deal with legal issues. He has appeared on national television and has been featured in regional and national publications, including US News & World Report, the Washington Post and Newsday. He received a J.D. from the University of Michigan, and he teaches courses in law and literature at the University of Pennsylvania.

As a follow up to this discussion, several student clubs on both campuses will host events and activities to raise awareness about the consequences of cyber-bullying.
