SJC Introduces Master of Science in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program

BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – JUNE 21, 2016 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to introduce the new Master of Science in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) program, admitting its first class this fall at both SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island. 

“SJC’s Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program responds to the national need for well-prepared nurse practitioners who provide care in a range of specialties,” said Maria Fletcher, RN, Ph.D., CNE, associate professor and director of SJC’s Department of Nursing. “This role is the most versatile of advanced practice nurse roles and offers the greatest flexibility when it comes to practice. A nurse practitioner can work in an operating or emergency room, critical care and many other practice areas.”

With the current expansion of health services to previously uninsured adults, the demand for quality primary care services is increasing. In addition, the rising aging population and declining numbers of primary care providers have prompted concerns for who is going to provide primary care. To address this issue, the role of the non-physician clinician, such as the nurse practitioner, needs to be enhanced by developing new educational and training programs.

The 42-credit AGPCNP program provides the theoretical and practical foundations for nurses to expand their scope of practice and to become leaders in their roles as advanced-practice nurses. Graduates of the program will be prepared to deliver quality primary health care for adults across the age continuum: post-adolescent, adult, the older adult and the elderly. The focus of this program is on the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered primary care and offers both didactic and clinical experiences that prepare nurse practitioners to care holistically for diverse individuals and populations in the context of families and communities.
