SJC Professor to Discuss History of Criminal Justice in NYC

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – February 22, 2016 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that Joseph Pascarella, Ph.D., associate professor of criminal justice and forensic computing at SJC Brooklyn, will present the Dr. Lenore M. Kelly Lecture in Social Sciences to kick off the College’s Centennial Lecture Series on Thursday, February 25 at 7 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium.

During his talk, Dr. Pascarella will discuss the evolution of the criminal justice apparatus in New York City since the College was founded in 1916. Dr. Pascarella will focus on the police and administration of justice, highlighting the major civil disorder and criminal issues that impacted NYC during this period, and charting how they have changed and evolved over the decades. He will also discuss the methods and technologies used by the New York Police Department (NYPD) to meet these challenges, and the current state of policing and law and order.
 
Dr. Pascarella is a retired NYPD captain  who was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research and teach at the National Police College of Finland in Espoo, Finland in 2003. Dr. Pascarella has published several articles on policing strategies, management and personnel issues, and is currently conducting research on mortality rates of NYPD police officers who worked on the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero after the September 11th attacks.
