SJC to Host N.Y. Premiere of Simon: Hijo del Pueblo

BROOKLYN, N.Y. April 29, 2014 The Department of Modern Languages at St. Josephs College (SJC) will host the New York premiere of the internationally acclaimed film Simon: Hijo del Pueblo on Friday, May 2 at 5 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Student Lounge located on the Colleges Brooklyn Campus. One of the directors, Julin Troksberg, will be present to discuss the filmmaking process and his interpretation of the history that inspired the film.

Written by Troksberg and Rolando Goldman, in collaboration with Argentine historian Osvaldo Bayer, Simon: Hijo Del Pueblo tracks the life of a young Ukrainian immigrant, Simon Radowitzky, and his role in the aftermath of the historical working class strike known as "Red Week in May 1909. The film was released last year to great acclaim in Argentina and Europe, and the Buenos Aires city legislature voted unanimously to declare the film of cultural interest. Recently, the film was screened in Paris and on several university campuses in the U.S.

"I invited Julin to showcase his film as part of my course, The City of Borges, said Dr. Antoinette Hertel, associate professor of modern languages at SJC. "In this course, we study what Borges tells us about his political cities: Buenos Aires, Latin America and the world. Simn could be read as a Borgean story, in which a man goes out to meet his (tragic) destiny, and in which the characters that seem to embody hero and traitor trade places.
