SJC to Host Youth Financial Literacy Event

May 17, 2016

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – May 17, 2016 - St. Joseph’s College (SJC), the Brooklyn (Kings County) Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the office of the Brooklyn Borough President are pleased to announce that they will co-host a lecture on financial literacy at Sunset Park High School on Thursday, May 26 at 11:45 a.m. At this event, representatives from Astoria Bank will present the basics of personal finance to more than 250 high school seniors.

“Just like physical fitness, financial fitness requires learning good habits and practice, practice, practice,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. “A high credit score and a monthly budget create the foundation for young adults to build wealth and save money for homeownership and future family finances. I am proud to work with St. Joseph's College and Astoria Bank on this ongoing financial literacy initiative that is helping to prepare young Brooklynites to achieve the American Dream.”

At earlier events at New Utrecht High School and Progress High School, nearly 200 high school students learned the basics of personal finance, such as credit, banking and budgeting. In addition, admissions advisers from SJC Brooklyn presented a primer on financial aid and the college application process to help students successfully apply for college.

“We are delighted to once again team up with St. Joseph's College to provide this valuable service to the community,” said Rick Miranda, president and CEO of the Brooklyn (Kings County) Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Education is at the heart of what we do, and by working with the Borough President and St. Joseph's College, we are able to share our knowledge to serve the youth of Brooklyn.”
