SJC to Welcome Author Dr. Laura Auricchio

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - February 2, 2015 - St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will welcome Laura Auricchio, Ph.D., to its Brooklyn Campus to discuss her latest book, The Marquis: Lafayette Reconsidered on Thursday, February 5 at 7 p.m. in the Parlors located in Tuohy Hall on SJC’s Brooklyn Campus.

An “absorbing” (The Wall Street Journal), “sharp and moving” (Kirkus, starred review) biography of the Marquis de Lafayette, French hero of the American Revolution, Dr. Auricchio’s study looks past the storybook hero who casts aside family and fortune to advance the transcendent aims of liberty and justice. Dr. Auricchio gives us a rich portrait of the man from birth to death, a man driven by dreams of glory and felled by tragic, human weaknesses. 

"We're thrilled to welcome Laura Auricchio to the Brooklyn Campus to discuss one of the most enduring and complex figures of the American Revolution," said SJC’s Brooklyn Campus Interim Executive Dean Dr. Jill Rehmann. "This probing study is an example for our students of how a discerning scholar's eye can add depth, insight and provoke discussion about the life of a public figure who passed nearly two centuries ago." 

Laura Auricchio, Ph.D., is a specialist in 18th-century French history and art. She received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University and her Ph. D. from Columbia University. She received her doctorate from Columbia University with distinction in 2000, sponsored by Simon Schama. Dr. Auricchio has been the recipient of major fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, the Whiting Foundation and Columbia University. She taught at Princeton University and Connecticut College, and is currently the dean of undergraduate studies at the New School in New York City.
