BROOKLYN, NY APRIL 29, 2010 St. Josephs College is proud to announce its new chapter of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), International Honor Society in Education. Students and faculty in the Department of Child Study were inducted into the society at a ceremony on Friday, April 23, 2010 in the Tuohy Auditorium on the Colleges Brooklyn Campus.
Over 30 individuals from the College were inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, including undergraduate students, graduate students in the Masters in Literacy and Cognition Program and Child Study faculty. Academic Dean S. Margaret Buckley and Associate Chairperson of the Department of Child Study Susan Straut-Collard accepted the KDP Charter on behalf of St. Joseph's College. Dr. Esther Berkowitz and Dr. Karen Russo, both professors in the Department of Child Study, will serve as chapter counselors.
"Our commitment to recognizing student scholarship and excellence in the field, in many ways, begins with this KDP chapter, said Dr. Russo, assistant professor in the Department of Child Study at SJC and chapter counselor. "We hope that our ongoing, active membership in this honorary organization will lead to many other opportunities to share, support and applaud student and alumni accomplishments.
Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) is an International Honor Society in Education founded by Dr. William Bagley in 1911 at the University of Illinois, with a mission to support and recognize scholarship and excellence in education. There are currently 582 chapters with over 45,000 members worldwide. Previous membership has included many notable individuals including John Dewey, Albert Einstein, George Washington Carver and Eleanor Roosevelt.
