Mike Johnston has more than 30 years of hotel and hospitality industry experience, including numerous positions in corporate management, operations and human resources. He has served as general manager at city, suburban and airport locations, and has been personally involved in numerous hotel openings, acquisitions and repositionings.
Johnston possesses extensive knowledge in all aspects of the hospitality industry. As past president of the Long Island Hotel & Lodging Association and current chair of the board of directors for the Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau, Johnston is a recognized leader within the industry with a long track record of success. The New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association recognized Johnston as Hotel Executive of the Year in 2009. Johnston is also a professor at Nassau Community College, teaching hospitality and tourism.
In addition to his wide range of industry experience, Johnston has spearheaded numerous charitable events in an effort to give back to the community and sits on numerous local and regional industry advisory boards.

John C. Tsunis, Esq., opened his law practice in 1977, specializing in real estate, zoning, commercial transactions and banking law. He is the current Chairman of the Board of Gold Coast Bank in Islandia, New York, and serves as a member of its executive and loan committees. He is the former Vice Chairman and General Counsel for Long Island Commercial Bank (Islandia, NY) and member of its board of directors, executive committee, and loan committees.
He is the owner of Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook and is active in real estate development transactions, hotel management and development, a Member of the Board of Governors of Touro Law School, Incoming Chairman of New York State Convention and Tourism Association, President of Tsunis Family Foundation Inc., past chair of the Stony Brook University Medical Center Children’s Hospital Task Force, past President of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce and active in other philanthropic endeavors. He was recently honored by the Village Times Herald as Man of the Year and resides in Poquott, New York with his wife Laura and son Charlie.

Mr. Wolff's documentary I'm Carolyn Parker will be screened before the talk at 3 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center.
Natural disasters are revealing: they expose past prejudices, societal divisions, what we value and what we don’t. During his talk, award-winning author Daniel Wolff will compare Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy and talk about what we can watch for in the relief effort to come. A viewing of Dr. Wolff’s documentary film I’m Carolyn Parker (directed by Oscar-winner Jonathan Demme) will precede his talk. A book signing will follow the presentation.

Mr. Wolff is the author of How Lincoln Learned to Read, a Chicago Tribune Editor’s Choice pick; 4th of July, Asbury Park, a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice pick; You Send Me: The Life and Times of Sam Cooke, a national bestseller; and two volumes of poetry, among other books. His writing has appeared in publications ranging from Vogue to Wooden Boat to Education Weekly. Mr. Wolff is the co-producer, with Jonathan Demme, of several documentary film projects on New Orleans.

Drawing from experiences and evidence gathered in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Drs. Rung and Mowen will discuss how neighborhood parks are affected by natural disasters, how they have been rebuilt and used in a post-disaster period, and the critical role that park and recreation services can play in addressing immediate mental health needs, fostering community engagement, and rebuilding social cohesion after a natural disaster.
Andrew Mowen, Ph.D. is an associate professor and professor-in-charge of the honors program at Penn State. Dr. Mowen is interested in environmental stewardship, opportunities for physical activity in nature, public health and the impact of neighborhood parks.
Ariane Rung, Ph.D. serves as president of the Louisiana State University School of Public Health Faculty Assembly, chair of the Epidemiology Student Admissions Committee and as an active member of the LSUHSC School of Public Health Administrative Council. Dr. Rung is interested in the built environment, social environments, parks, physical activity and the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS.
