Micro Internship Program

The Micro-Internship Program
St. Joseph's University's Micro-Internship Program provides organizations with a competitive advantage when recruiting St. Joseph's students. By offering these short-term assignments, organizations can gain early access to high-potential students, support diversity and inclusion efforts, and enhance their brand on campus, all of which lead to improved hiring outcomes. Micro-Internships don’t replace your existing internship program or on-campus recruiting efforts, and hiring managers value the immediate support, making it easy to engage them in these mutual auditions. What are micro-internships?
Micro-internships are short-term, professional assignments, comparable to those tasks that could be given to a new hire or a summer intern. Some common examples are content creation, industry research, data cleansing and social media support. Typical micro-internships require five to 40 hours of work by the student (in total), are typically due a few days to a few weeks out and can be completed remotely. Companies set the fixed price the student will be paid for each micro-internship (often between $150 and $600 depending on the scope) and select who they want.

Internship Listings

The Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development utilizes the definition of an internship as well as the standards and criteria established by National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE).

An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skill development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for a career path. They also give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.

For more information, visit naceweb.org.

Please note, if the internship is being offered for credit, the student is required to obtain permission from his/her academic department. All internship postings — paid or unpaid, credit or non-credit — must include learning outcomes, as well as internship responsibilities, qualifications, application instructions and deadlines.

On-Campus Recruitment

On-campus recruitment is an excellent way to build your presence on campus and attract highly qualified students. This can be done through:

Information Table

The Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development invites employers to visit campus and host an Information Table in a high-traffic area, informing students about opportunities available with your organization.

Information Session

Visit St. Joseph’s campuses and provide a formal presentation to interested students outlining company information, internship and employment opportunities or general industry information.

Interviews

The Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development can arrange for employers to meet with and interview candidates directly on campus. The office will advertise the position, collect résumés of qualified candidates for interview selection, and schedule a time and location to meet with candidates.

Students @ Work

In our continuing effort to ensure that St. Joseph's University students are career-ready at graduation, the Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development is excited to announce Students @ Work! Our goal is to provide opportunities for students to gain practical knowledge of potential careers through a variety of experiential programs, and to offer employers ways to meet our talented, motivated and enthusiastic St. Joseph's University students.

Programs may include the following and are designed to prioritize both student and employer benefits:

Job-Shadowing

Typically a one-to-one experience that allows a student to learn about a profession firsthand. Job shadowing length can vary, and visits may be short in duration involving several hours or more lengthy and span several days. These can be customized to meet the goals and needs of both the employer host and the student.

Company Site Visits

Company site visits provide occasions for small groups of students to tour an organization’s office space, meet current employees, listen to a presentation that outlines current opportunities and allow students to learn more about company culture.

Informational Interviews

Informational interviews give students an opportunity to interview an employee and learn about a profession. Informational Interviews are usually brief, no more than 20-30 minutes in length, and may include the following types of questions:

  • Describe a typical day in your role as “x.”
  • How did you become interested in this industry or role?
  • What do you like most about your job? Least?
  • What are some specific skills that are critical to success in this role?

Contact Kevin Gill at 631.687.1252 or [email protected] for scheduling.

Career Fairs

The Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development hosts Career Fairs each year on both campuses. Employers from various fields are invited to participate and meet with students to share organizational information and opportunities for employment, internships or volunteering.

In addition, the Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development often collaborates with other colleges in the surrounding area to co-sponsor career fairs. These fairs are typically larger in size and provide employers with an opportunity to meet students from various colleges. Registration and event information can be found on Handshake.

Employer Recruitment Policy

The Employer Recruiting Policy provides guidelines and procedures for employers who wish to utilize the resources offered by St Joseph’s College Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development.

The Principles of Professional Practice, as set forth by NACE, are outlined below. For more information, visit naceweb.org.

Non-Discrimination Policy

Employers who work and advertise with the University will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, sex, age, disability or genetic information. By working with the St. Joseph's University Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development, you are agreeing to these terms.

Unpaid Internships

It is encouraged, when possible, to pay interns. We do recognize, especially in the nonprofit sector, that it is not always possible to do so. If your organization is considering posting unpaid internships through St. Joseph's University, you must adhere to the NACE guidelines for internships.

  • The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
  • The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to employment settings.
  • The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.
  • There are clearly defined learning objectives and goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
  • There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
  • There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.
  • There are resources, equipment and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives and goals.

Third-Party Recruiters

Third-party recruiters who wish to post opportunities with the St. Joseph's University Office of Career Development and Engagement must agree to the following terms and conditions:

  • The third-party recruiter shall disclose the name of the employer and the position description. The client’s name should appear in the title of the position.
  • Students and alumni will not be charged a fee for the third-party recruiter’s services.
  • The third-party recruiter can be listed as the contact for student and alumni cover letters and résumés.
