Academic Organizations

Accounting Society

The Accounting Society is a great way for any accounting student to get involved on campus as well as network with other individuals in the accounting program. It is run by enthusiastic accounting majors and meets several times throughout each semester.

Over the course of the academic year, the accounting society brings in CPA Review Course representatives who talk about the structure and any changes to the CPA Exam. In addition to this, the accounting society also holds résumé writing and interviewing skills workshops, to which attendance is mandatory if an accounting internship is desired.

Throughout the year there are also guest speakers with vast expertise in all fields of accounting that share their experiences with our members.

Our members also have the opportunity to get involved in fundraisers of which the proceeds go towards the Big Brothers Big Sisters charity.

In the Spring Semester, members are encouraged to participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). Through this program, members prepare and file income tax returns for the elderly and low-income families at no charge. All training is provided to students for this program.

Overall, the mission of the Accounting society is to provide students with opportunities to support and develop the skills required to succeed in the program and to enter the real world of business and/or accounting.

The St. Joseph's University chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children/Child Study Club (CEC/CS) is an organization which strives to raise awareness in the community and provide services for children with and without special needs. Our goal is to expand this mission within educational and community settings.

Moreover, CEC/CS promotes the participation of our entire college population as well as the community through service, fundraising, events for children and charitable donations. The Council for Exceptional Children/Child Study Club works to provide service, research, understanding and dedication, with a continuing goal to raise awareness within society.

"Other people and things can stop you temporarily. You’re the only one who can do it permanently."

Our Charity

This year the CEC/Child Study Club will be raising money for Autism Speaks. The money we raise will be donated to aid the Autism Speaks Foundation in their funding of research into causes, preventions, treatments and a cure for autism. Our club is also going to be raising awareness about disorders on the autism spectrum.

Club Membership

The CEC/Child Study Club continues to help prepare and enrich future teachers outside of the classroom. Membership is not limited to only child study majors. We meet every Wednesday during Common Hour and are constantly looking to expand our event list and welcome all new ideas. To be an active member of the club, it is important for all members to come to the majority of the meetings and club events.

Math Club

The Math Club was formed to foster a general awareness throughout the St. Joseph's University community about the importance of mathematics in today’s society and to increase networking opportunities throughout the student body.

Our mission is to engage the student body and outside community on issues concerning mathematics and math education through entertaining activities, motivating workshops and group study sessions while fundraising for our club’s charity – The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.

Although the Math Club understands that not everyone will share the same interest in mathematics as its members, we strive to create an environment where math can be respected for its contributions to society.

Philosophy Club

The Philosophy Club is intended to be a meeting place for students who are interested in the study of philosophy. Members do not have to be philosophy majors or minors; all students are welcome to join. It is a place to explore ideas that may be unable to be expressed in class. During club meetings, we wish to hold “seminars,” in which students, officers or members, may present a topic to spark discussion and debate to familiarize ourselves with a broader range of conceptions, such as religion, ethics, politics, and more. We want to create a community in which students can expand their knowledge, learn new things, and explore the diversity of ancient and modern philosophies together. We believe philosophical discourse and education in a relaxed club setting will foster wisdom for a lifetime.
