In individual counseling, you work one-on-one with a therapist to clarify your concerns, create specific goals to work towards, better understand yourself, and learn new skills to improve your emotional management skills and overall well-being. Attending College can be exciting and stressful. Counseling can help you deal with a wide range of issues, from academic stress and family concerns to managing relationships.
During the first session, you will be asked a series of questions that will help the therapist get a sense of your strengths and the areas in which you can improve. Therapeutic goals are created followed by weekly sessions or referral services. Sessions are typically 45-50 minutes, once a week.
Our services are provided with your privacy and confidentiality in mind. Information obtained during a counseling session or in written form will not be disclosed to anyone without your written permission.
We offer semesterly workshops that cover topics such as adjusting to college to trauma. They meet together under the guidance of a professionally trained therapist. It is a safe place where you come together with peers to learn and discuss the identified topic.
In group therapy, students are able to share strengths and difficulties, are able to help one another through this sharing process, and also stand to learn that they are not alone. Group therapy also allows each member to learn about them by observing how they interact with others in the group setting.
Crisis counseling is a short-term intervention offered for students in distress to provide guidance, education, and support. If a trauma or crisis is not resolved in a healthy manner, the experience can lead to more lasting psychological, social, and medical problems. We encourage every student who are experiencing personal crises to visit our office (Touhy Hall, Room 215). The counselor on site will make every effort to provide immediate assistance.
Crisis counseling is not a substitute for individuals who need and are not receiving intensive or long-term psychological care and may involve outreach and work within the community.
If this is an emergency between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday please contact The Office of Counseling and Wellness at 718.940.5853 or campus security. If it is after hours or over the weekend, please call 911 immediately.
